Although GB Music was not officially launched until 1988, the story
really begins a dozen years earlier. Gary Borress, then a staff
writer at the Beat magazine and host of the radio show on WBRS,
was invited to a recording session by a band he was covering for
a story. Hirsh Gardner was producing the session and the two became
fast friends. " I certainly knew of his history with the group
New England. Everyone knew the hit Don't Ever Wanna Lose Ya, but
I didn't know about his skills as a producer." recalls Gary.
" I remember just realizing that first day how talented he
was, working on vocal lines, inflections, arrangements, really detailed
stuff."
Hirsh on their first meeting..."In comes this young guy, extremely
bright, very mature for his age, and with tremendous knowledge of
the music industry. He really impressed me. From that moment on
I knew that we would work together in some way. The great thing
about GB Music and our relationship is that we really want to enjoy
and have fun with everthing we do. At the same time, we are a great
balance for each other, always making sure that the quality of what
we do always rises above the very high standards that we set."
In the coming months Hirsh was a guest on Strictly Local, and Gary,
with his interviewing so many groups, started referring bands to
Gardner. This kept the two in touch for several years. In 1990 Gary
relocated to NYC to start a management company. At this juncture
the two officially went into business together by producing and
managing Shyboy. The foursome had tremendous local success and Hirsh
produced their self-titled debut, which eventually signed to American,
European and Japanese record contracts.
Since Gary and Hirsh had so many contacts in a wide array of areas
of the music industry, they decided to form GB Music Ltd., a record
label dedicated to releasing great rock music music that had core
support but had been overlooked by the major labels.
In the past five years GB Music has released over a dozen titles
from artists such as New England, Hirsh's solo album Wasteland For
Broken Hearts, The Ramainz (featuring Dee Dee & Marky Ramone),
Starz, 8084, Baker Gurvitz Army and many others. The label continues
to release gems by some of the greatest acts of the past 25 years.
2004 will bring with it several new GB releases from The Atlantics,
Three Colors and 8084 as well as the first DVD release on the label:
Starz: Back In Action.
